BANGALORE: Gavi Siddayya of Innovators Chess Academy (ICA) won the C.V. Raman monthly chess tournament which concluded at at the State Youth Centre here on Sunday. Gavi Siddayya tied for the top spot with Sushrutha Reddy, also of ICA, both finishing with 5.5 points apiece. But the former was adjudged the winner on account of a higher tie-break score. In the final round, the second seeded Gavi Siddayya defeated the top seed Vivek Nambiar. Final placings: Open: 1. Gavi Siddayya (5.5 pts); 2. Sushruta Reddy (5.5); 3. Seshadri (4.5); R. Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare rally The second edition of the Maruti Suzuki Dakshin Dare rally was ceremonially flagged off from here on Monday. Covering a distance of 1800km, the rally officially begins in the early hours of Tuesday, passing through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu before ending in Kerala. The five-day event, spread over 20 stages, has drawn 70 participating teams, up from 30 last year. Flagging off the rally, Shashank Srivastava, Chief General Manager (Marketing), Maruti Suzuki, said that after having organised rallies in the north and the north-west of the country, the Dakshin Dare was an attempt to bring the motor-sport to South India. The route takes participants through Mysore, Coorg, Ooty, Coimbatore, and Munnar before ending at Ernakulam. The hilly ghat terrain, factoring in the arrival of the South-West monsoon, is expected to provide drivers an arduous challenge. This edition of the event sees the introduction of the two-wheeler category, featuring twenty participants. The rally will have an ‘Ultimate' category' for professionals and an ‘Endurance Trial' category, in the TSD format, for amateur drivers. Among the participating teams this year, most of which are from Bangalore, is one international team from Australia, and one all-woman team from Delhi. Raghu sizzles C. Raghu's nine-wicket haul backed by a 104 helped Social Cricketers gain a 74-run first-innings lead over Herons CC in a KSCA Group I, first division league match that concluded in a draw here recently. The scores: Herons CC 228 in 62.4 overs (Prajwal 93 n.o., Nidhuvan 34, Tejas Thrishul 33, Ananth 26, C. Raghu nine for 80) drew with Social Cricketers 302 for eight decl. in 74.2 overs (C. Raghu 104, Mithun Beerala 46, Sudhindra Shinde 35, Vinodh three for 41). Jawans CC 249 for nine decl. in 89 overs (Vinoo Prasad 77 n.o., Amit Verma 51, Chetan William 48, Tausif 32, Sarfaraz Ashraf five for 113) drew with Mount Joy CC 220 in 52.4 overs (Sunil Kumar Jain 59, Manjesh Reddy 58, Rajkumar 27, Vinoo Prasad five for 79, Rajoo Bhatkal three for 35). FUCC (1) 212 in 63 overs (B. Akhil 67 n.o., Sunil Raju 36, Kunal Kapoor 26, Arjun Shetty four for 60) drew with Jawahar SC (1) 318 for eight in 88.3 overs (Sudhir Rao 87, K.C. Avinash 64, Shishir Bhavane 55, Goutham 33, Darshan 30). Bangalore Cricketers 241 in 75.4 overs (Akshay 41, Praveen 32, Yogesh 32, Ramalinga Patil five for 40) drew with Jawahar SC (2) 83 for three in 30 overs (Bharath 34). Boxing trials The selection trials for the Karnataka junior, sub-junior and senior boxing teams will be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore on June 12. The selected boxers will then compete in the National junior boxing championship at Chennai from June 29 to July 4 and in the National senior boxing championship at Noida from July 10 to 16.
