NELLORE: Now it was confirmed. Even as the media reported that more than 30 people died of sunstroke at various places this year, the officials after verifying the cause of the deaths confirmed that ten people died of heat wave conditions in the district so far. Of the ten deaths, one G. Devadanaiah (66) died of sunstroke in March this year while the remaining persons succumbed to heat wave in a span of just twenty days in May. Unconfirmed reports say that around 20 people died due to heat wave in the district. Following the reports in media about sunstroke deaths, the Medical and Health Department officials along with para-medical staff visited the houses of the victims. After enquiring the cause of death of each person with concerned village sarpanch, neighbours and family members, the officials confirmed the deaths and sent a report to the government. Victims According to DM&HO T. Venkat Ramana Reddy, R. Kotamma (72) of Vakadu mandal, Y. Subbaramaiah (65) and E. Ravindra (36) of Gudur, K. Ramanamma (60) of Duttaluru, G. Subbamma (64) and V. Chenchamma (73) of Thotapalli Gudur, Sultan Basha (52) of Atmakur K. Chenchemma of Marripadu and U. Subramanyam of Indukurpet mandals died due to sunstroke so far. The medical officer in the report mentioned that the deaths might have been caused due to sunstroke and poor medical treatment to the patient. The district administration sent a report to the Commissioner for Disaster Management about sunstroke deaths, said Collector K. Ramgopal. Even after the first week of June, heat wave conditions were continuing in many places in Nellore district making the people sit indoors and there is a huge demand for soft drinks, tender coconuts and fruit juices. The PHC staff are visiting the rural areas and are educating the people on how to prevent sunstroke and are distributing ORS packets in villages. ‘Laila' claims four lives If this is so, four people died in various rain-related incidents when the cyclone ‘Laila' struck the district in May. With this, the total number of deaths caused due to nature's fury was put at 14 in a period of just two months this year. The victims' family members are appealing to the government to provide compensation for all those who died due to sunstroke under ‘Apatbandhu Scheme'.
