Additional 43 cr. for minority students

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Centre has sanctioned an additional amount of Rs.43 crore towards pre-and post-matric scholarships for the students belonging to minority communities.

Disclosing this to media persons here on Monday, Minorities Welfare Minister Md. Ahmedullah said this was in addition to an equal amount sanctioned in October last. However when the Minorities Finance Corporation forwarded the computerised list of eligible students who submitted their applications through online system, the government released the second instalment three days ago. Overall 2.4 lakh eligible minority students out of about four lakh applicants availed the benefit under pre and post-matric scholarship scheme for the year 2009-10, he said. The Minister said that Andhra Pradesh availed the maximum benefit under the scheme thanks to the awareness created by the Minorities Welfare Department.

He said that eligible students could submit their applications through online or in the conventional form for pre and post-matric scholarships for the year 2010-11 by August 5 by duly submitting affidavit and income certificates.

Under the State government's fee-reimbursement scheme, Rs.122 crore was sanctioned for students of minority communities during 2009-10 and of which Rs.40 crore was released.
