‘State cannot be faulted if people enjoy drinking'

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Senior Congress leader J.C. Diwakar Reddy has made light of the criticism from the opposition parties that the government is encouraging liquor consumption and claimed that “the government cannot be faulted when people want to enjoy their drink”. The government, on its part, was strictly following the Excise Act and was auctioning the outlets to prevent rampant sale of liquor everywhere. “Liquor consumption is a question of individual habit and it is for the individuals to quit consumption,” he said adding prohibition of liquor did not meet with success even in the most disciplined countries.

Responding to queries from reporters here on Monday, Mr. Diwakar Reddy refuted reports on the differences between Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. “They were seen so closely interacting during a function on Sunday. People were surprised over the affectionate way they were talking with one another,” he said.

He, however, declined to answer a question about Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy's criticism that Mr. Rosaiah should take responsibility for the stone-pelting and subsequent police lathicharge at Mahbubabad in Warangal district.
