COIMBATORE: In view of complaints of insects from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown at Sivananda Colony entering houses, Congress councillor from Ward 33 of the Coimbatore Corporation has appealed for better pest control measures. In a letter to the Chairman of the FCI, Mr. Senthilkumar has said tiny insects called tribolium bred on the godown premises had entered the houses in the colony. May-June was the breeding time for these insects and they virtually invaded the houses in the colony in large numbers. The residents were going through an agonising period because the insects landed on their plates while they were having food, fell into drinking water and even settled under pillows. The councillor said a woman resident woke to severe pain in the ear and was rushed to a hospital at night. An insect was extracted from the ear. Another person fell off a two-wheeler when a few insects hit his eyes. The councillor said the godown should be shifted from Sivananda Colony as a large residential area was being put to hardship by the insect menace. Besides, the heavy lorry traffic to the godown also inconvenienced the public. As an immediate measure, the FCI authorities must take up insect control measures. But, a lasting solution lay in the shifting of the godown, he said.
