Blasts case: Maudany charge-sheeted

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Abdul Nasir Maudany, chairman of the People's Democratic Party, is among the six persons against whom the Bangalore police filed an additional charge sheet on Friday in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case.

“We have secured enough evidence to name Mr. Maudany as an accused in the case,” said a senior police officer overseeing the investigation.

The city police, so far, have filed charge sheets against 32 persons, including the six in the additional charge sheet. “Of the 32 persons, 12 are absconding. We are looking for three persons from outside the country,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar told presspersons here on Saturday.

Nine separate cases were registered in connection with the blasts, which killed a woman.

Mr. Kumar said five of the accused in the additional charge sheet were from Kerala and one was from Karnataka. “Out of the six, four persons are in judicial custody and two are at large. The charge sheet, he said, also provides additional evidence against Thadiyantavide Nasir and Shafaz, who were arrested on December 3, 2009, Mr. Kumar said.

The city police have recorded the statement of Mr. Maudany's wife, Sufiya. “We have not yet questioned Mr. Maudany,” Mr. Kumar said.

To file bail plea

Staff Reporter writes from Kollam: Mr. Maudany will move court on Monday or Tuesday for anticipatory bail.

Talking to mediapersons from his Anwarssery camp, Mr. Maudany said he had learnt about his inclusion in the list of the accused from his lawyers in Bangalore. Asked about the possibility of an arrest warrant against him through a court in Karnataka, Mr Mauday said he had always respected the judiciary and would continue to do so. He, however, alleged that a ‘wing' within the Intelligence Bureau had been constantly targeting him.
