Ire on the street: The police are targeted during a protest in Srinagar on Saturday against the death of a teenager in a clash between demonstrators and the police on Friday.

Srinagar: Defying prohibitory orders on Saturday, hundreds of people took part in the funeral of a 17-year-old youth who was killed during Friday's clash between demonstrators and the police, even as skirmishes between protesters and the police left 35 persons, including 15 policemen, injured across the city.

As the body of Tufail Ahmad Mattoo was handed over to the next of kin by the police, people came out of their houses and marched towards the residence of the Mattoos in Saidkadal.

Taken in

procession

The body of the youth was taken in a procession to the Jamia Masjid, where the chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq; JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik; vice-chairman of the rival faction of the JKLF Javid Ahmad Mir; and other Hurriyat leaders, including Syed Saleem Geelani, participated in the “Nimaz-e-Jinazzah' (prayer before burial).

Large

gathering

Later, the body of the 12th class student was buried at the martyrs' graveyard in Eidgah, a vast ground in the old city, where a large gathering assembled from different parts of the city, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said the body was handed over after a team of doctors constituted by the District Magistrate conducted post-mortem.

“As the mourners insisted on burying the body at Eidgah, the route was cleared. The police and the CRPF showed restraint, as a result of which the entire process passed off, by and large, peacefully,” the spokesman said. — PTI
