BANGALORE: Bangalore University on Saturday honoured one of its famous alumni — the Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerapa Moily — for winning the Moorthy Devi Award of Jnana Peetha Prathishtana for his epic, “Sree Ramayana Mahanveshanam”.

Mr. Moily, who accepted the felicitation, spoke about the characteristics of epics, and described them as representation of contemporary values. He said readers should look at characters put together rather than their individual personalities. Referring to the caste system, Mr. Moily said: “culture comes from nurturing, not nature.”

Governor Hansraj Bhardwaj, who is the Chancellor of BU, admitted after felicitating Mr. Moily that he was not fond of epics and was sceptical about Mr. Moily's work as it was released during the time of the Ram Sethu controversy.

The Governor, though critical of epics due to their failure to bring about unity in society, said scriptures were useful as guiding principles just as judicial precedents. He said the Constitution was the most relevant epic. Complimenting Mr. Moily's poetry as having an illuminating effect, he said he had high hopes from him as the Law Minister as he was aware of the practical difficulties of the poor.

Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev, Kannada poet Nissar Ahmed and High Court judge Sridhar Rao were present.
