Coimbatoreans brave rain to take part in thozhamai marathon

For a cause: A section of the participants in“Pirappokum Thozhamai Marathon” organised by Bharathiar University and Tamil Maiyam to popularise the World Classical Tamil Conference in the city on Saturday.

COIMBATORE: As many as 7,000 men, women, and children took part in the “Pirappokum Thozhamai Marathon” that was held here on Saturday. It was flagged off from the Police Recruit Grounds at 6.30 a.m.

Organised by Bharathiar University in collaboration with the Tamil Maiyam to popularise the theme - “Pirappokum Ella Uyirukkum” – of the World Classical Tamil Conference, saw the young and old braving the rain to take part in the run.

The 10-km race for men was flagged off by Mayor R. Venkatachalam.

The winners were Rajendran, Mahendran, and Deenadayalan.

The six-km race for women and male students below 18 years was flagged off by Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi.

The winners among the women were Dhanalakshmi, Padmabhanu, and Dhanapriya. The winners among the male students were Karthik, Senthilkumar, and Ramkumar.

The three-km run for girl students below 18 years was flagged off by Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisami.

The winners were Sowmya, Vaishnavi, and Annalakshmi.

Ms. Kanimozhi handed over the prizes to the winners.

City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu, Inspector General of Police, West Zone, P. Sivanandi, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra, Founder of Tamil Maiyam Fr. Jegath Caspar, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University C. Swaminathan, President of Tamil Maiyam S. Martin, and Secretary of Tamil Maiyam K.N. Manivannan, were present.
