PALAKKAD: The State government should increase the procurement price of paddy from Rs.12 to Rs.20 a kilogram in the coming harvest season, Deesheeya Karshaka Samajam general secretary Muthalamthode Mani said in a statement here on Sunday. The existing procurement price does not meet the cost of production as the wage of agriculture workers had increased. The cost of power tiller, tractor, fertilizers and pesticides had also gone up, the statement said. Unless paddy cultivation is made profitable people will not be able to take up farming, he said. Food security should be ensured by reviving paddy cultivation. More people had taken to paddy cultivation in recent months. This had resulted in an increase in production. Nearly half of the total paddy produced in the State is from the district, he said.
