Techniques on diversified fishing explained

By a fishing expert from Norway; variety of fish catching methods demonstrated

Tuticorin: To adopt eco-friendly fishing methods for enhancing sustainable fishing resources in the coastal waters, key techniques on diversified fishing were imparted to the fishermen of Tuticorin on Tuesday.

Ian Kinsey, a fishing expert from Norway, which is pioneering in technologically advanced fishing, demonstrated a variety of fish catching methods with the help of traps.

The techniques of trap fishing, bottom long line fishing, hook and line fishing and trolling line fishing were sent across to the listeners, including fishermen from various coastal hamlets, students and staff of the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tuticorin.

The traps could be used for catching all species of fish, crab, lobsters and prawns. Under the influence of collapsible traps entangled with nylon wires with the support of steel grip, fish could be trapped. The weightless traps could easily be carried in boats.

According to the wish of fishermen selective fishing could also be preferred with the adjustable traps. A fish weighing up to a maximum of up to 50 kilograms could be trapped.

With the advent of this technology, fishing methods with collapsible traps would help grow the young ones for a future breeding stock. The enforcement of dynamic regulation of fishing should be in place for diversified fishery, which is the need of the hour.

Instead of dumping the fish in small buckets and baskets, priority should be accorded to hold a standard size of plastic boxes with ice and quantity of fish in the box had to be accordingly so that the products would not be crushed, he said.

M. Sakthivel, Consultant to Tata Sons and former Chairman and Director, MPEDA, said Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training (FITT), the programme organiser, was streamlining its strategies for promoting diversified fishing with scientific technologies, providing training for processing of fish for value added pack of ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat quality. Later, the fishing methods were demonstrated along the coast of Muthaiyapuram, Tuticorin.

Halvard, another fishing expert of Norway, R. Sheik Jalaludeen, Chief Executive Officer, FITT, Chennai, Vijayaraghavan, Inspector of Fisheries, R. Shalini, Assistant Director of Fisheries (Training), Julius, Assistant Director of Fisheries (Training) Fisheries Department, Dr. Sundaramuthy, Department of Fishing Technology and Fisheries Engineering, and Neethiselvan of FCRI were present.
