HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has categorically said that it did not consider the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) as the lone party championing the separate Telangana cause. Replying to queries at a press conference here on Tuesday, CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said several other parties were supporting separate Telangana State. “We don't think they (the TRS) are the champions of separate Telangana.” Asked whether the CPI would contest the ensuing Assembly byelections, he said the party's State council would meet on the issue shortly and take a decision. “Supporting Telangana and taking a stand in favour of a separate state is one thing, contesting the elections is different,” he said. Mining mafia Mr. Bardhan expressed concern over the ‘mining mafia' becoming a political factor in some States. Citing the example of the Reddy brothers, he recalled how they were helping the governments headed by two rival parties BJP and the Congress in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh respectively. “The leaders of the two opposition parties are supporting them in spite of the fact that their activities are disturbing the boundaries of the two States,” he said. He alleged that Reddy brothers had bought over many MLAs in Karnataka and the same could repeat here. The CPI general secretary, who launched a signature campaign against corruption later, said the party would bring out a booklet exposing the ‘wrong tactics of Maoists' that was giving an alibi to the State to resort to State terrorism.
