Nagapattinam
SIGNS OF REVIVAL:Cement bags being kept for export to Sri Lanka at Nagapattinam port on Thursday NAGAPATTINAM: The Nagapattinam port is a picture of export-related activity after a four-year-long hiatus with shipment being barged for export to Sri Lanka. Over 2,000 tonnes of cement are being loaded into barges for export to Sri Lanka. The last such export was carried out in 2006, post-tsunami. The export is expected to bring in work for local fisherfolk besides pumping in revenue for the port. According to a source, the shipment was bagged away from the Karaikal port on grounds of cost-efficiency. The port has the facility for four barges with a capacity of 250 tonne each. The cement has been brought in trucks from Alathiyur in Pennadam in Cuddalore district. The second instalment of 800 tonnes would be shipped shortly. On Thursday, the port received a shipment of 4,000 tonnes of palm oil from Indonesia.
