KOCHI: The General Hospital has opened a gender-based violence management centre, Bhoomika, that would provide counselling to patients who were admitted with physical, mental and sexual abuse. Mayor Mercy Williams inaugurated the Centre on Friday. The Centre was functioning in the hospital since December 2009 and till now had handled 62 cases. Of these 50 cases had reached the hospital with physical injuries. The doctors, nurses and other staff have been trained to handle such cases. The chairperson of the Corporation Standing Committee on Health is the chairperson of the district-level committee that oversees the functioning of Bhoomika. The District Medical Officer is the convenor. The hospital Superintendent, Police Commissioner, Circle Inspector, Women's Cell, are some of the members of this committee.
