KURNOOL: K. R. Venugopal, former IAS officer, said market economy can not address the complex issues of Indian society where poverty and affluence co-existed. Delivering the Moturi Hanumantha Rao endowment lecture here on Friday night after presenting the best journalists award, he said around 5 crore Indian population could not afford to buy food even from the public distribution system (PDS). Such group required free supply. Mr. Venugopal was critical of NREGA programme stating that the employment guarantee assured by the scheme was insufficient. It promised to give only half the wages if failed to provide work. He wanted expansion of the scheme to provide 200 days work for two members in a family.
