Bangalore: The former Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha and veteran BJP leader S. Mallikarjunaiah has warned the State Government that farmers may have to launch an agitation if the Minister and officials concerned fail to prevent traders from cheating copra growers. In a press release, Mr. Mallikarjunaiah alleged that at agricultural produce marketing committee (APMC) yards, traders were cheating farmers using faulty weighing scales. Though the Centre had fixed Rs. 4,700 as support price for a quintal of copra and the State Government had announced an incentive of Rs. 300 for a kg of the produce, the benefits had not reached the growers as both the State and Union governments had not yet set up procurement centres, he said. Taking advantage of the situation, traders were exploiting farmers, he added.
