Guliskan ends Kim Phung's run

Arvind Aaron

Chennai: Nakhibayeva Guliskan of Kazakhstan ended the winning run of Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam in the seventh round of the Stree Seva Mandir Asian junior chess championship here on Monday.

With the win, Nakhbayeva joins Vo Thi Kim Phung in the lead with six points each. The title interest in this section is now wide open. In the joint third place on 5.5 points are defending champion and top seed Padmini Rout and R. Preethi. Two rounds remain to be played.

Nakhbayeva went for a big king side offensive and won a pawn. Then she sacrificed a bishop to destroy the black king side. On the 48th move, overnight leader from Vietnam resigned in a rook ending with a double pawn deficit.

The battle between the top two seeds, Padmini Rout and Bhakti Kulkarni was keenly fought. Padmini prevailed in the middlegame tactics as she repeatedly threatened the uncastled, often unsheltered black king. Bhakti gave up a queen for rook to survive but Padmini used her passed pawn to win in 46 moves.

Madurai girl Preethi used the board space well to defeat Michelle Catherina of Chennai in 32 moves.

Shyam Sundar in lead

Shyam Sundar drew with Mehar Chinna Reddy by repeating the position in 28 moves to keep his half- point lead in the boys' group. In a queenless middlegame, the players repeated the position to make a quick draw.
