Collector warns against attack on census staff

Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL: The Kanyakumari district administration has warned that it would not hesitate to invoke the Goondas Act against those attacking or abusing employees involved in census work.

Collector Rajendra Ratnoo said that there had been complaints of attack on enumerators. Wherever there were complaints, cases had been registered at the nearest police station and criminal action initiated against the culprits.

Any repeated instances of attack would attract detention under the Goondas Act, he warned in a press release issued on Monday. The census exercise is being undertaken by government employees and school teachers from June 1 to 15. The Collector appealed to the people to co-operate with the enumerators and respond to their queries properly.

According to police, Velappan (35) of Pottal Vilai near NGO Colony was arrested by the Suchindram police on the charge of abusing a middle school teacher of Pallam who was on enumeration duty. The police arrested him under Section 353 of Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act 2002.

Another enumerator is alleged to have been attacked and abused at Chembagaramputhur near Kanyakumari. The police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the miscreant.
