Mock rescue operation staged in Udyavar river

Six boats were used for the demonstration

Udupi: Personnel of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the Home Guards, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), the district police and Tebma Shipyards Ltd. jointly organised a demonstration of relief and rescue operations in the Udyavar river at Udyavar near Udupi on Monday.

The demonstration of how to save people during floods, give first aid and shift people to ambulances from boats, impressed people. Six boats were used in the demonstration. Chief Fire Officer, Mangalore Range, H.S. Varadarajan told presspersons that the personnel had been trained in proper usage of boats during floods, on evacuating people from collapsed houses or buildings, dealing with trees which fall due to rains and winds and pumping out flood water from houses.

Sharath Kumar, general secretary of Udupi district unit of IRCS, said that 20 personnel of the society had been trained in such operations.

Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha, Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar, president of district unit of IRCS Basrur Rajeev Shetty, District Commandant of Home Guards Ganapati Bhat and District Fire Officer Shivappa Gowda were present.
