TRS to move court on exclusion of segments

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) will challenge in the AP High Court the Election Commission's decision to exclude Sircilla and Vemulawada Assembly constituencies from the forthcoming byelections in Telangana.

The party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao said at a press conference on Monday that the EC's action was a bundle of contradictions involving two Constitutional bodies – the Speaker of Assembly and the EC.

He said the EC was party to petitions pending in court against former Sircilla and Vemulawada MLAs as it had declared them elected in 2009.

Even before the petitions were disposed off by the court, the Speaker accepted their resignations and notified the vacancies.

Instead of challenging the Speaker's decision in the court, the EC unilaterally excluded the two constituencies from the schedule.

“In the absence of any orders to stay election in the constituencies, how can the EC exclude them from the schedule? Moreover, the petitions in court against the victory of the two candidates had also become infructuous,” Mr. Rao remarked.

He appealed to EC to rectify its ‘mistake' and issue a fresh schedule including the two constituencies.

Mr. Rao said the exclusion of the constituencies was a political conspiracy by the Congress in the wake of pre-poll surveys indicating a landslide victory for TRS.
