Get ready for meteor showers today

Staff Reporter

It will be visible from 7 p.m.

BANGALORE: Wednesday evening will be astronomers' delight when the Bootid meteor showers are expected to peak.

Parent comet

Named after the constellation from which the meteors appear to radiate, “7P/Pons-Winnecke”, is the parent comet of the bootids showers, according to Akshay Kumar, member of the Association of Bangalore Amateur Astronomers.

The meteor showers will be visible from 7 p.m.

“The northern constellation, Boötes the Herdsman, is easy to find because the brilliant orange star, Arcturus, marks its base. Arcturus is the fourth brightest star in the night sky.”

The radiant — the point in the sky where the meteors seem to come from — lies about 30° north-northeast of Arcturus.
