Maudany's bail plea to be heard on June 29

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: An anticipatory bail application filed by Abdul Nasir Maudany, chairman of the People's Democratic Party, one of the 32 accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case, has been posted to June 29 for arguments.

The Fifth Fast Track Sessions Court, on Tuesday, adjourned the hearing as Maudany's counsel Usman sought time.

H.M. Omkaraiah, officer with Central Crime Branch, Bangalore, filed objections to the grant of bail. Public Prosecutor K. Rudraswamy filed a copy of a 2002 ruling of the Guwahati High Court which does not permit anticipatory bail after the court has taken cognisance of an offence.

Maudany's name figures in the additional charge sheet filed by Mr. Omkaraiah on June 11 before the First Additional City Metropolitan Magistrate. Shohib, Sarfuddin, Thajuddin, Abdul Khadar and P.B. Saabeer have also been named in the charge sheet.

The court had taken cognisance of the charge sheet and issued a non-bailable warrant against Maudany, directing him to appear before it on Wednesday. The city police are yet to execute the warrant. Following the warrant, Maudany filed the application seeking anticipatory bail before S. Watati, judge, Fifth Fast Track Sessions Court.

When the application came up for hearing on Tuesday, Mr. Rudraswamy sought time to enable Mr. Omkaraiah to appear before the court.
