SRINAGAR: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Tuesday said all efforts would be made to ensure peace and development in Jammu and Kashmir.

At the end of the 75th All India Presiding Officers Conference held here, Ms. Kumar told a news conference: “This place has a different kind of attraction. What struck me the most were the smiles on the faces of scores of tourists when I went to take a shikara ride in Dal Lake.”

Maintaining that Kashmir held a unique place in the nation, she said: “We are proud of Kashmir and its youth. We want to assure the people of Kashmir that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure peace, development and prosperity in Kashmir,” she said.

“Shah Faisal has really made us proud. We will ensure that the dreams of every youth come true.”

Asked about the killing of two youths in police action, she said: “I do feel concerned about the killing of innocents. We condemn such incidents. I have come to know through media reports that the government has ordered a probe. I hope the government will take suitable action.”

She said the conference passed a resolution that “all legislatures may adopt a uniform committees system” to secure accountability of the executive to the legislatures, through in-depth scrutiny of budget, monitoring and review of performance of the Ministries and departments.

Ms. Kumar said the conference also decided to constitute a committee of presiding officers to look into the problem of disruption of question hour. Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha K. Rehman Khan will be chairman of the committee. The other members will be Speakers of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
