Do not compare States on MGNREGS fund use: Paloli

Staff Reporter

Says Kerala has achieved commendable performance

Kozhikode: Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said that comparing the performance of States with a population of over 20 crore with a small State such as Kerala, having a population of 3 crore, on the utilisation of funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) is not proper.

Inaugurating a review meeting of the employment scheme and the EMS Housing Scheme implemented in the local bodies here on Tuesday, Mr. Mohammed Kutty said the criticism against the State on underutilisation of funds could not be justified. The wage (Rs.125 a day) provided under the MGNREGS was a relief to workers in North India, but the average daily remuneration of a worker in the State was Rs.300.

The State had achieved commendable performable in spite of this disparity in wages, Mr. Mohammed Kutty said.

District Collector P.B. Salim said 75,070 of the 75,172 applicant families had been provided employment under the MGNREGS during the previous financial year. As many as 21,62,208 man days had been created. A sum of Rs.31 crore had been utilised for the purpose.

Nearly 5,239 of the 9,641 works had been completed, Dr. Salim said.
