BERHAMPUR: The students and staff of Khallikote autonomous college in the city have decided to celebrate 22nd of every month as ‘Green Day'.

To take up the initiative the teaching and non-teaching staff of this premier college of south Orissa have decided not to use any motorised vehicle for their travel to the college. The college administration felt this move by the staff would have impact on the students and it would also reduce use of vehicles especially bikes without any purpose by the students. “If taking cue from us students also start coming to college by non-polluting vehicles like bicycles on this day it would be a great achievement,” principal of the college Niranjan Barik said.

A meeting was also held on Tuesday to highlight the importance of this observation. Students and staff of the college attended the meeting. The principal and the Prof. S.N.Behera, the HOD of the Economics department attended the meeting.

An eco-club was formed in the college which would promote plantation, reduction of carbon emission and eco-awareness among the students.

It may be noted that in recent past a garden has come up near the BCA department on the campus due to efforts of the student and staff of the department.

One of the directors of the BCA department Sunil Rath came up with suggestions for students and staff regarding reduction of carbon emission and other pollution on the campus through small measures.

He suggested the students to avoid riding bikes and vehicles unless there was extreme need.

“We should also try to take back our polythene litter like empty water bottles to nearby dustbins so that they could reach out for recycling,” he suggested.
