On Monday morning some 60 persons were taken ill due to leak of chlorine gas BERHAMPUR: The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) was totally unprepared and callous towards emergencies that may emerge due to leakage of hazardous chlorine gas, felt the authorities of the Orissa's State Pollution Control Board (SPCB). It may be noted that on Monday morning around 60 persons were taken ill due to leak of chlorine gas from a cylinder kept callously at a warehouse of the PHED at Ankuli area of the city. As per the initial findings of the SPCB the PHED officials did not take basic precautions while dealing with a cylinder of chlorine gas . Regional officer of the SPCB posted in Berhampur Hemendra Nath Nayak, who played a major role in neutralising the chlorine leakage with the help of technical team of Jayashree Chemicals said the PHED officials did not have basic knowledge about the precautions and safety measures related to storage of chlorine gas cylinders. It may be noted that Chlorine is an acidic medium. Sprinkling of water on the leaking cylinder only intensifies corrosion, Mr. Nayak said.
