MADURAI: An ancient, seven feet long cannon was unearthed on the East Veli Street, near Albert Victor Bridge, here on Tuesday.

Drainage work

The Madurai Municipal Corporation has been carrying out stormwater drainage work in many parts of the city.

While the workers were engaged in digging a particular stretch, they spotted the cannon, covered by mud.

A historian who visited the spot said that the cannon made of wrought iron may weigh a little over 150 kg and could have been used in early 17 {+t} {+h} century.

Officials from the district administration requested the State Archaeology authorities to examine the cannon.

A police officer said that they were informed about its presence by local residents. Further investigation is on.
