Compound walls for schools in ‘danger zone'

SSA officials identifying schools closer to highways, ponds

District Level Monitoring Committee to decide the list of schools on June 30

Construction process to begin after obtaining Collector's clearance

MADURAI: Government schools, which urgently require compound walls for the safety of students, are being identified in Madurai district.

Officials of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) are now in the process of identifying schools that are in the “danger zone” due to their location near National Highways, ponds and lakes or at any other places that are prone to natural hazards.

Sources in the SSA (Madurai district) told The Hindu on Tuesday that the district got a budget allocation required to construct 5,000 metres of compound wall for various schools this year.

“Compared to last year, the allocation is high this year for our district. Government schools, particularly panchayat union middle schools, which do not have compound wall will be given sanction in the next few days,” a senior SSA official said.

Each school will require approximately 100 to 150 metres of compound wall. The District Level Monitoring Committee is meeting on June 30 to decide on the list of schools where construction of compound wall has to be undertaken quickly.

An official said that the list of schools would be finalised only after doing a spot assessment. Schools situated on the national highways, urban areas, hilly areas, lakes and ponds would get priority.

“Since the basic requirement of classrooms and related infrastructure has been met in almost all government schools to a large extent, our next focus is on compound walls. During 2010-11, this aspect will be taken care of by the SSA,” officials said.

Collector C. Kamaraj is being briefed about the schools' requirements and the construction process will begin after obtaining his clearance.

Another priority area this year would be to construct ramps in government schools for the convenience of physically challenged students. The SSA budget allocation for Madurai district also had substantial provision for providing sufficient number of toilets in panchayat union schools.
