Corrections and clarifications

A sentence in the first paragraph of “Monsoon drama” (Editorial, June 21, 2010) was “There was much relief when the India Meteorological Department announced that the cooling rains of the monsoon had reached Kerala on March 31.” It should have been May 31.

The second paragraph of “What future for Jarawas?” (Editorial, June 21, 2010) said: “ This year has already seen the death of the last Great Andamanese speakers of the Bo and Khora tribal languages.” A reader points out that of the two last surviving speakers of two Great Andamanese languages — Khora and Bo — one died in February 2010. The other person died last November. (A report on this appeared in The Hindu on February 5, 2010 titled “Andamanese tribes, languages die”.)

The writer clarifies that the sentence should have said “Within the period of a year, we have already seen the death of ....”

The sixth paragraph of “How The Hindu covered the 1984 Bhopal calamity” (‘Online and Off Line', June 21, 2010) had a reference to the United Press of India. It should have been United News of India (UNI).

The heading of an article in a feature “World Classical Tamil Conference” (Tamil Nadu, June 23, 2010) was “Klieglights on Classical Tamil”, leading to a query. “Klieg” (also klieg light) is a powerful electric lamp used in filming. It is named after the American brothers Anton T. Kliegl (1872-1927) and John H. Kliegl (1869-1959), who invented it.

The third paragraph of a report “Powers of all Railway Recruitment Board chairmen to be curtailed” (June 23, 2010) was “... However, he [Railway Board Chairman Vivek Sahai] added, the CBI's preliminary report, that the sale of question papers for two examinations had been masterminded by [Mumbai Railway Recruitment Board Chairman] Mr. Sharma, started the Railways.” The word should have been “startled”.

The Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, J. Krishna Palemar was incorrectly referred to as “District in-charge Manager” in the caption of the photograph that went with a report “GPS made mandatory for lorries carrying sand” (Mangalore, June 22, 2010, page 3).

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
