Presidents and vice-presidents for nine GPs in Haliyal taluk elected Karwar: Haliyal taluk witnessed an interesting spectacle of political foes joining hands in some gram panchayats during elections to the posts of president and vice-president on Tuesday. Out of the 20 gram panchayats, presidents and vice-presidents for nine gram panchayat were elected. Of these, the election was unanimous in two gram panchayats, while it was closely fought in the rest. The role of BJP was crucial in these elections. BJP joined hands with Janata Dal(S) in some panchayats, while it supported the Congress in some others. In Sambarani panchayat, which is a stronghold of the Congress, the party lost the president and vice-president posts though its supporters were in a majority here. Here, the BJP joined hands with the JD (S) and trounced the Congress-supported candidates. In some gram panchayats, supporters of BJP backed the Congress to defeat JD(S) backed candidates.
