Clearance for fisheries university

First of its kind in the country

Headquarters at fisheries college, Panangad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to form a new university to cater to the fisheries sciences and the fishing industry in the State.

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will have the fisheries college at Panangad near Kochi as its headquarters, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said after the weekly Cabinet meeting. It would undertake studies and research for the promotion of the fishing industry.

Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said in an official release that it would be the first university in fisheries sciences in the country. It was proposed to be located in Kochi because of the confluence of several research institutions in fisheries and related subjects in the city and its importance of location in fisheries.

Task force

The Minister said the idea of a fisheries university was first mooted in 2006 at a workshop organised for the preparation of a master plan for fisheries development. Subsequently, a task force was formed with V. Raveendranath as chairman for preparing a report on the proposal.

Mr. Sarma said higher education in fisheries faced several hurdles now, such as lack of basic facilities and courses designed to cater to the needs of the sector and absence of interaction with farmers and technical experts.

By 2025, there would be around 32 lakh man days in the fisheries sector in the country. Of this, six lakh man days would be in the managerial sector and the rest in the technical sector. Hence the importance of forming a university in fisheries and ocean sciences. Further steps needed in connection with its establishment would be taken immediately.
