Hassle-free loans for students sought

District panchayat president congratulates banks on achieving the annual loan target.


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: District panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan has called upon banks to disburse education loans to all eligible students without any hassle.

Inaugurating a district-level review committee meeting on banking here on Tuesday, Mr. Nagappan congratulated the banks for achieving the annual loan target of 2009-10.

George Mercier, MLA, urged banks to improve credit delivery to the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes and women and provide more banking facilities to the people in coastal areas.

N. Rajan, MLA, urged banks to conduct awareness programme on schemes for financial inclusion. J. Arundhathi, MLA, asked banks to consider disbursing loans to men self-help groups.

Priority sector

The meeting was informed that financial institutions in the district disbursed Rs.4,944.44 crore under the priority sector against the target of Rs.3,919.26 crore.

Under the agriculture sector, Rs.2,477.68 crore was disbursed against the target of Rs.1,546.44 crore; Rs.2,258.63 crore was disbursed in the service sector against the target of Rs.2,107.78 crore; and in the non-farm sector, which includes industrial credit, disbursement was to the tune of Rs.208.13 crore. Under the non-priority sector, the banks disbursed Rs.3,493.14 crore against the target of Rs.1,445.56 crore. The meeting was told that Thiruvananthapuram District Co-operative Bank achieved 103 per cent of the target.

The meeting was informed that the banks collected nearly Rs. 5 crore from revenue recovery cases with the help of revenue officials.

The total bank deposits in the district stood at Rs.26,716 crore and the advances Rs.17,219 crore. The credit deposit ratio for the district is 64 per cent.

P. Thomas, Assistant General Manager, RBI, presided over the meeting and N. Xavier Thomas, Deputy General Manager, IOB, delivered the introductory address.

K.T. Thrivikraman, District Development Officer, NABARD, reviewed the achievements.

V.R. Muralidhar, lead district manager, and R. Gireesh Kumar, manager, lead bank, spoke. Regional managers and officials of various banks and department heads attended the meeting.
