CPI (M) cries foul

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: CPI (M) district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao on Wednesday said there was an attempt by the official machinery for forcible eviction of the project-affected families to facilitate early establishment of Naval Alternate Operation Base (NAOB) in S. Rayavaram and Rambilli mandals.

He told reporters that just to terrorise such families at Revu Vantada, one of the affected villages in the area due to the naval project, the officials have disconnected power supply. Even the schoolteacher was stopped from going to the village and ration supply was denied for the past two months.

Alleging human rights violation, he said forcible eviction by the authorities had led to support by all parties to the agitation being spearheaded by fishermen and other communities hit by the NAOB.

Stating that they were not opposed to the second naval base's establishment to meet defence needs, he said for the affected families, the benefits as envisaged in GO Ms. No. 68 should be followed. He said the affected people were insisting on compensation package offered for the fishermen of Gangavaram.
