Malayavasini, is also seen. VISAKHAPATNAM: Books can't find a solution to problems faced in society, noted writer and Telugu professor in Wisconsin University Velcheru Narayana Rao has said. Participating in an interaction programme at Visakhapatnam Public Library on Wednesday, he said literature could not bring about a change in society. He also felt a writer would be equivalent to a dead man if he did not change his views over a period of time. He was reacting to a question on whether he still was committed to the opinions expressed in his book “Telugulo Kavita Viplavala Swaroopa Swabhavalu.” He bemoaned the lack of good publishing houses in the country that had to make do with printers. He also made a distinction between good publishing houses and commercial ones. Prof. Narayana Rao said the quality of translation differed from writer to writer and the same book might have a number of translations. Prof. Narayana Rao translated Pingali Surana's Kalapoornodayam into English with David Shulman. The country had a hoary tradition of story-telling and its people always loved to read their great books, he added. Retired Head of the Department of Telugu of AU K. Malayavasini moderated.
