New facility: Union Minister of State for Railways E.Ahamed after inaugurating a booking-cum-reservation complex at the Kozhikode railway station on Thursday. — Kozhikode: A sum of Rs.5.60 crore will be sanctioned for constructing a foot overbridge and linking four platforms at the Kozhikode railway station, Union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed has said. Inaugurating a newly built booking- cum- reservation office complex here on Thursday, the Minister said the fund would be utilised for extending shelter at the platform number one. “As part of enhancing the facilities, tenders have been floated to install three new lifts at the railway station. The works are expected to be completed within eight months,” the Minister said. He added that a special meeting of people's representatives would be convened in Kozhikode on July 5 to discuss the development of rail facilities in the district. Responding to an issue raised by Mayor M. Bhaskaran at the function, Mr. Ahamed clarified that “Railways will not be able to do any special favour for the city Corporation which is delaying remittance of a pending licence fee of Rs.72.56 lakh for making use of Railway's 5,254 sq.ft land - between Nadakkavu and West Hill- as footpath. Railways have their own rules and regulations, which cannot be violated for reasons which are apparently unreasonable.” Yeshwantpur Express Mr. Ahamed said the daily service of the Kannur- Yeshwantpur Express would begin on Friday. “Railways are concerned of fulfilling each of the additional services demanded by the people, but it may take time,” he added. M.K. Raghavan, MP, in his presidential address, demanded that the Railway Ministry should take steps for allotting more general coaches in trains. Mr. Raghavan also requested the Minister to sanction a Railway Medical Clinic at the Kozhikode station, besides an ambulance to meet emergency situations. MLAs A. Pradeep Kumar, P.M.A. Salam and Southern Railway Divisional Manager S.K. Raina were also among others who addressed the function. Six PRS counters The booking- cum- reservation complex, constructed at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore, houses six Passenger Reservation Counters (PRS) and six Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) counters. An exclusive counter has been allotted for the use of physically-challenged.
