Objection:Women from Warangal Fort area staging a protest at the Prohibition & Excise Rural Office in Warangal on Thursday.

WARANGAL: Scores of women came together voluntarily in Warangal Fort area to protest the launch of a new liquor shop and demanded that the shop be moved out of the residential area.

About 200 women of Kapuwada and other colonies within the Fort have been protesting the location of wine shops, which was earlier restricted to one end of the Fort but has now moved to the centre amidst the residential area.

The shop was auctioned for Rs. 1.90 crore and the trader sought to move the location from 9th division to 8th division in the Fort to make up for the revenue. The officials did not object at the shop being located within the residential area. The women in the surrounding colonies began protesting and gave petition to district Collector and other officials.

On Thursday, scores of women took out a silent protest sporting black ribbons on their mouths and reached the Prohibition & Excise Rural Office at Labour colony.

They raised slogans against the shops and excise officials. They submitted a memorandum to Circle Inspector Mr. Ramesh Reddy demanding immediate closure of the shop.

Local political leaders – E. Ramesh of Lok Satta, D. Someswar of TRS, R. Yakaiah of INTUC and others joined the women in protest.

Adding to woes

Women argued that the sale of illicit liquor and belt shop activities were on the high already and the new shops only added to their woes. It was located very near a temple and a school. “The atmosphere during the night time is dreadful and terrifying for the passersby. The shop should be closed or moved to another locality forthwith,” they said.
