BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday commended the police, particularly the Bangalore City Police, for their work in solving cases and maintaining law and order.

Speaking after inaugurating new buildings for the city police and various welfare measures here, Mr. Yeddyurappa attributed the “excellent work” by the city police to the honesty and integrity among the top police officials.

If the top official is clean, the system works efficiently, Mr. Yeddyurappa said while congratulating City Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari and his team for what he termed excellent work by the city police.

While the average crime rate has come down, detection rate has considerably improved, from 45 per cent in 2007 to 61 per cent during 2010, Mr. Yeddyurappa said. However, the Chief Minister asked the police to work harder. Along with detecting crimes, they should sternly deal with the perpetrators of crime to ensure that they do not commit the offence again.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said a situation had arisen in which people were losing faith in democracy even as corruption was ruling the roost. “If people do not have the freedom to approach a police station and get their grievances redressed, independence has no meaning. Hence, the police should ensure proper treatment to the general public and redress their grievances”, he said.

At the same time, the Government would provide all required facilities to the police who have been working round the clock, the Chief Minister added. His Government had allocated highest amount to the department — Rs. 2,092 crore in 2009-10 and Rs. 2,345 crore in 2010-11, he said.

The Chief Minister has some advice to the police and their families too. He asked them to get the best of the education to their wards. “Let your children join other profession and not the police force,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Yeddyurappa laid the foundation stone for the traffic training centre at Thanisandra, inaugurated the new office for the Deputy Commissioner of police (Traffic – West) at Hebbal, inaugurated the new building for Chennamanakere Achchukattu police station, handed over 160 new vehicles to the city police, distributed scholarships to meritorious wards of police personnel, distributed aid to Vanita and Makkala Sahaya Vaanis and cash prizes to police personnel.

Home Minister V.S. Acharya, Transport Minister R. Ashok, Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Abhijit Das Gupta, Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Ajai Kumar Singh, Mr. Bidari and other senior police officials were present.
