VMC gearing up for elections to general body

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is gearing up to conduct elections to the VMC general body based on the electoral rolls published during the last general elections.

There are more than 6 lakh voters in all the three Assembly segments in the city – Vijayawada West, Vijayawada Central and Vijayawada East. While each Assembly segment has more than 2 lakh voters, each division has a population of 12,000 to 15,000. While the 7th division has the highest population of 17,442, the 19th division has the lowest population of 12,907.

The existing voters' list was prepared after enumerating the names just before the last general elections. But the people could still enrol their names in the voters list as it is a continuous process. The VMC officials are waiting for ‘clear' guidelines from the State Election Commission, sources say.

The population of each division would be decided based on the 2001 census, with projections for the current year.
