Green Signal for Pune Metro

Amruta Byatnal

PUNE: In what it called a historical moment, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) passed the resolution on the Pune Metro here on Wednesday. In spite of a huge protest from several NGOs and citizens' groups against the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)'s Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the Metro, a majority of 65 votes were cast in favour of the proposal, giving the Pune Metro a go ahead from the general body.

Earlier, citizens had been barred from attending the meeting by Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal.

Shiv Sena abstained from voting, walking out of the house before the proposal was put to vote. According to the resolution, the PMC would fund 10 per cent of the total cost, while the rest would be borne by the State and Central government and other sources. The Mayor declared that the foundation stone to the 14.925 km metro corridor would be laid on December 12, which happens to be NCP (Nationalist Congress party) chief Sharad Pawar's birthday.

Out of the 19 amendments made to the resolution, only three were accepted. They were the inclusion of the metro in the Developmental Plan, execution of a monorail project on the high capacity mass transit route, and a request to all the ministers in the state cabinet, MPs and MLAs to support the project.

The resolution maintained that all the buildings along the metro corridor would be allowed 4 FSI(Floor Space Index).

The Corporation's decision to get a Metro system in the city has been facing opposition since the time of its inception.
