SHIMOGA: The City Municipal Council is continuing its drive against encroachers and taking back possession of its property. As part of this, a CMC team, led by president N.J. Rajashekhar, razed seven houses and 10 petty shops, that that come up on a CMC site measuring 6,580 sq. ft. on B.H. Road near Tunga Bridge, here on Saturday. According to CMC sources, seven families had been occupying the site for 30 years and 10 persons were running businesses there. The CMC had decided to construct a commercial complex on this site for which Rs. 50 lakh had been set aside in the budget for 2010-11. Mr. Rajashekhar said that the seven families who were cleared from the site would be provided sites under the Ashraya scheme. He said that those who wanted to have shops at the proposed complex should pay an advance. Mr. Rajashekhar said that there were many more properties that belonged to the CMC. They were being identified and would soon be taken possession of. He promised that the properties would be reclaimed only after alternative arrangements were made for those who would be evicted from the place. He said that till now CMC property worth about Rs. 10 crore had been recovered.
