Assault triggers protest by doctors

Doctors demand protection, seek police outpost on hospital premises

Duty doctor assaulted by a patient's relatives

‘Such cases are occurring often'

HASSAN: Over 50 doctors, from both government and private hospitals, staged a dharna outside the Chennarayapatna Government Hospital on Saturday in protest against the alleged assault on a duty doctor, Praveen Kumar L.N., and an attender, Ramakrishna, by relatives of a patient early on Saturday.

They submitted a memorandum to tahsildar Varaprasad Reddy seeking protection and a police outpost on the hospital premises. Dr. Kumar stated in the memorandum that at about 2.30 a.m. on Saturday, Nagesh and Gundanna from K.R. Pete, Mysore district, brought their relative Vijaya Kumar to the hospital.

Vijaya Kumar, who had chest pain, was sent from K.R. Pete general hospital as there was no ECG facility there. Dr. Kumar, who examined the patient, told the relatives that there was no ECG facility here either, and advised them to take the patient to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences. Enraged by this, Nagesh and Gundanna allegedly assaulted Dr. Kumar and manhandled Mr. Ramakrishna.

The police came to hospital but instead of taking the accused into custody reportedly allowed them to leave. Dr. Kumar went to the police station and said that if a case was not registered, he would contact the Superintendent of Police. Only then was a case registered and the accused taken into custody.

Doctors said that such cases of assault were occurring often.

Women medical officers too worked during the night and needed protection. They met C.S. Putte Gowda, MLA, who promised to take up the matter with the Government.
