‘Establish toddy development board'

State adopting dual policy on toddy: panel

Panel demands ‘neera' policy

‘Toddy-tappers will launch an agitation'

BANGALORE: The Gulbarga-based Toddy Tappers' Struggle Committee has sought establishment of a toddy development board and formulation of a “neera” policy as promised by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in Chamarajanagar recently.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, samiti president Shankar H. Kattalli said though the State decided to set up a toddy development board, toddy had not been brought under its purview.

He said that the quality of toddy was similar to “neera” tapped from coconut palms.

“Over 25,000 families in Gulbarga alone have lost their livelihood owing to the ban on sale of arrack. Moreover, there are over three lakh palms in the district from which toddy could be tapped. This could provide jobs to many in the district,” he said.

He alleged that the Government was adopting a dual policy on the sale of toddy. While cooperative societies had been permitted to sell toddy in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, it had not considered the request of toddy-tappers from other districts.

“Maharashtra and Kerala too are selling neera through Khadi Gramodyag sanghas. The Government should make a similar arrangement throughout the State,” he said.

Mr. Kattalli said that toddy- tappers would launch an agitation if the Government did not set up the board and formulate the policy as promised to safeguard the interests of toddy-tappers and their families.
