Chess
Chennai: Girish Koushik of Karnataka and Sunyasakta Satpathy of Orissa will start as top seeds by virtue of higher FIDE ratings in the National under-13 boys and girls chess championship which will be played at Arumuga Thirumana Nilayam, Muthialpet in Puducherry from Sunday morning onwards. Around 104 girls and 165 boys from 13 states are competing in this event which is organised by JCI Pondicherry Midtown on behalf of the Pondicherry State Chess Association. The top finishers will represent India in the World Under-14 Boys and Girls Championship of 2011. There will be eleven rounds and the winners will be decided on July 5. Prominent titled Woman FIDE Masters among girls are M. Mahalakshmi, G.K. Monnisha and Srija Seshadri. G. Lasya of Andhra is defending her title. Among boys, the FIDE Masters are Girish Koushik, Shardul Gagare, Harshal Shahi and Diptayan Ghosh. Udayan Ghosh of Kolkata is the chief arbiter. The winners in boys and girls will receive Rs.10, 000 each and the total of the prize fund is Rs.1 lakh. The event will be inaugurated by K. Lakshminarayanan, M.L.A., in the presence of A. Bakthavachalam, President, Pondicherry State Chess Association, Vice President, AICF, and Sundaravadivelu, Director of School Education later on Saturday evening. — Arvind Aaron
