The police have launched Operation Monsoon to curb crimes and reduce accident rate, writes Biju Govind. The city police have advised people to be cautious during the monsoon when there could be a spurt in burglaries. Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, P. Vijayan said the police have launched ‘Operation Monsoon' to prevent criminal activities. The police have been successful in nabbing several anti-social elements and drug dealers recently and have made major breakthrough in the crackdown on burglars, he said. He said ‘Operation Monsoon' would focus on preventing thefts and reducing the accident rate on city roads. The recently-formed City Shadows, aimed at curbing property crimes and strengthening intelligence gathering, would cooperate with the special squads of Operation Monsoon, the Commissioner said. Shaukath Ali, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Control Room), who is in charge of Operation Monsoon, said nine flying squads, a highway patrol and mobile patrol from each of the 15 police stations, would function round the clock during the monsoon. Besides, he said the police would take precautionary measures to bring down the number of accidents. Campaigns to create awareness of traffic rules and regulations would be launched at educational institutions, particularly in schools. Pamphlets would be distributed to motorists on maintaining their vehicles such as lights and wipers, Mr. Ali said. The police have also made arrangements to serve black coffee to drivers of vehicles during night hours. Two stalls would function on the National Highways on Kannur road and Wayanad road from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., he said. Residents have been advised to take protective steps against burglaries at houses, personal safety and vehicle thefts. They have been asked to keep at least one bulb burning outside their home at night. Doors and windows should be kept locked. The police have advised people to inform their neighbours about their absence from hone even for a short period. Parents should not allow young children to open the door to visitors.
