Bypolls: Citizens' groups to create awareness

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Election Watch, a civil society group working for elections without malpractices, and six other social service organisations have proposed to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Chief Electoral Officer of the State to create better awareness among voters about their responsibilities and ensure quality in the ten byelections. The six other groups are M.V.Foundation, COVA, APSA, CHATRI, Chelimi and Forum for Better Hyderabad.

Leaders of these citizens' groups, led by M. Vedakumar, State convener, Election Watch, met CEO I.V. Subba Rao at his office in the Secretariat on Saturday offering their services in voter enrolment, implementation of the code of conduct and preventing use of liquor and cash as inducement to voter and defacement of public properties by political parties and contestants with wall writings, posters.

Mr. Vedakumar later told reporters that they would constitute district-level committees in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Warangal where by-elections are being held on July 27 to ten Assembly constituencies. “We will bring every electoral malpractice to the notice of the CEO for immediate action,” he said.
