Letters to the Editor
This has reference to the editorial, “Of marriage and murder” (June 26). Notwithstanding the reports by the eight State governments to the Supreme Court, the Centre should immediately enact legislation banning the khap panchayats which are functioning as illegal courts with their “own laws.” Any other irrelevant body functioning parallel to gram panchayats should also be prohibited. Krithika Chidambaram, Chennai It is heartening to note that the Supreme Court has indicated its willingness to come out with a new law against ‘honour' killings. While only time will tell how strictly these laws will be implemented, increasing literacy rates in various parts of northern India will go a long way in curbing the menace. Deepa Nagaraj, Hyderabad Denying the basic right of choosing the life-partner amounts to barbaric behaviour and will never stand the scrutiny of law. Penalties for overlooking traditions are untenable and intolerable. S. Srimoolanathan, El Dorado Hills
