KANNUR: Education and Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby has said that the State government has made meaningful cultural interventions over the past four years.

Inaugurating the second-phase work on the office complex of the Kerala Folklore Akademi at Chirakkal here on Sunday, Mr. Baby said the Left Democratic Front government could intervene in the cultural field with more vigour and greater public support and continue the previous initiatives in the cultural arena. The interventions included initiatives to develop infrastructure for cultural institutions and organisation of cultural events, such as the folklore festival in Kollam.

Tank renovation

To a proposal for protecting the Chirakkal Chira, a 5.6-hectare tank facing the akademi's office, the Minister said the government would consider a project to protect the tank, owned by the Chirakkal royal family.

He urged the akademi authorities to take the initiative to submit a proposal for the renovation and protection of the tank so that the Cultural and the Tourism departments could implement a project.

He said the Union government's schemes for protecting heritage sites could also be utilised for the renovation, with the help of architects and heritage experts. Its present owners should allow the government to renovate and protect the tank. He sought the cooperation of the public to make the project a reality.

The Minister inaugurated Cherussery Mandapam, an open auditorium in the office compound.

A.P. Abdullakutty, MLA, presided. M. Prakashan, MLA; district panchayat president K.K. Narayanan; akademi chairman C.J. Kuttappan; and secretary A.K. Nambiar were present at the function. A presentation of folk songs by a local troupe followed.
