More than eyesore: The roadside drain near the Government High School at Uzhavarkarai is affecting students and the general public. PUDUCHERRY: Residents of Uzhavarkarai near the Government High School on Vincent Street are grappling with non-maintenance of roadside drains and irregular clearance of garbage. Following the heavy rain last week, residents said that sewage had entered their houses as the drains were clogged with garbage. The drains had not been de-silted for months, the residents said, adding that their complaints were falling on deaf ears. “Evenings have become nightmares because of mosquito menace,” said Santha, an elderly woman in the area. Apart from mosquitoes, the residents said that they were plagued by snake menace. “Even today we had to drive out a snake from my house. They usually take refuge in these drains,” said Fatima, another resident. With the drains flowing right outside the school, she said children could also be affected. The residents also complained about the lack of public toilets in the area, forcing them to use the space behind the school. “Though the nearby locality has a public toilet, we do not use it as people over there complain. We need a public toilet in this area immediately,” said Santha Responding to the issue, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department Manoharan said no complaints have been received by the department from the residents. The department can only respond if people inform them about clogging.
