MANGALORE: The prices of vegetables may not rise immediately owing to the fuel price hike, Central Market Merchants' Association Hameed Kandak secretary said. Mr. Kandak said that the prices of vegetables might even fall due to distress selling in monsoon. Lorry owners might increase their charges by Rs. 1 a km, although their costs will go up by around 30 paise a km. President of the South Canara Transport Operators' Association Sanjeeva Shetty said: “In order to be competitive, transport companies tend to retain old rates despite fuel price hikes.” Communist Part of India (Marxist) B. Madhava termed the move to hike fuel prices authoritarian. It would have a cascading effect on the prices of essential commodities, he added.
