Mid-day meal scheme launched in Vadakkekara

Nedumbassery: ‘Amma Than Bhakshanam'- a composite nutritious mid- day meal programme for the school students launched in the Vadakkekara assembly constituency will serve as a model initiative for the State, Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanadan said here on Sunday. Inaugurating the scheme at a public function in Puthenvelikkara near here, the Chief Minister held that the scheme would help the upbringing of the student community in the region by assuring their nutritional requirements. Describing it as a step up on the state sponsored mid- day meal programme, he also congratulated the House panel led by Fisheries Minister S.Sarma for its initiation.

He was of the view that the vegetable farms to be developed in the schools as part of the programme would also serve as a model for the other schools in the state and would immensely benefit the student community.

The Chief minister also inaugurated an applied science college established by the IHRD in Puthenvelikkara at the same function. On the college, the Minister said the institution on applied science would help in developing the region by imparting technical education to the students.

Fisheries minister S.Sarma who presided over the function said the composite meal programme would benefit nearly 18,000 students up to the higher secondary level in the various government and aided schools within the constituency.

The Minister also elaborated on the three - tier organizational structure envisaged to ensure public participation in carrying out the scheme.

According to him, the scheme provides for the meals to be prepared by the parents and supported by the students through developing vegetable farms in the school campus. During the event, Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran inaugurated the vegetable farms in the schools and K.P.Dhanapalan, MP, District Panchayat president P. S. Shyla, Deputy Director of the department of education Anila George were among those who spoke.
